Jussi Backman is a Senior Research Fellow and former Senior Lecturer at the University of Jyväskylä, holding docent titles from both the University of Jyväskylä and University of Helsinki. His research focuses on continental philosophy, history of philosophy, ancient philosophy, and political theory. He has held an Academy of Finland Academy Research Fellowship (2018–2023) and supervised numerous doctoral candidates across philosophy, political science, and education disciplines.
Backman's academic journey includes a PhD in theoretical philosophy from the University of Helsinki (2010), preceded by studies in Nice Sophia Antipolis and Helsinki. His work bridges ancient and modern thought, particularly engaging with Heidegger, Aristotle, and Arendt. Key research themes include metaphysics, biopolitics, and radical conservatism's philosophical underpinnings.
He has authored/co-authored over 99 publications, including articles on topics like Putin's metaphysical conservatism and Heideggerian finitude. His editorial and review activities span journals like Journal of the British Society for Phenomenology and Iai News. Backman is fluent in Finnish, English, French, German, Swedish, classical Greek, and Latin.
