Dr. Jurriaan de Vos is a Senior Scientist and Curator at the University of Basel, affiliated with the Department of Environmental Sciences - Botany. His research focuses on plant diversity through time, integrating phylogenetic approaches to study evolutionary relationships, niche evolution, and reproductive trait dynamics in clades like Aeonium, Cactaceae, and Primula. He combines herbarium-based studies with modern genomic techniques to address ecological and evolutionary questions.
- Education: PhD in Botany (2012, University of Zurich, with distinction); MSc in Biology (2007, Wageningen University, with distinction)
His work spans global ecosystems, with fieldwork in extreme environments like alpine zones, islands, and prehistoric lake sediments. He supervises PhD and MSc students on projects ranging from floral evolution in Connaraceae to ecosystem responses in Saxifraga. Recent publications highlight phylogenomic advancements in Cactaceae classification and stable isotope applications in plant physiology. Scientific awards include PhD and MSc distinctions. He contributes to teaching courses in plant systematics, flower biology, and alpine ecology field excursions.
