Professor Jurriaan Ton is a Professor of Plant Environmental Signalling at the School of Biosciences, University of Sheffield (2015–present), and Co-director of the Plant Production and Protection (P3) Centre. His research focuses on plant immunity, environmental stress responses, and epigenetic mechanisms. He holds ERC Consolidator and Proof-of-Concept grants, and previously served as a BBSRC Research Fellow and NWO-VENI Fellow.
Education: PhD in Biology from Utrecht University (2001), MSc in Biology (1996). Postdoctoral roles included work at the University of Neuchâtel and Rothamsted Research.
Research interests include plant defense priming, transgenerational epigenetic memory, and the role of root exudates in shaping soil microbiomes. His lab collaborates with agritech companies to translate findings into crop protection strategies.
Key awards include ERC and NWO grants, and BBSRC Fellowships. Teaching includes courses on plant-microbe interactions and future agricultural systems. Current students advise include Adam Parker, Chi-Nan Tao, and others.
