معرفی
Jurgen Haanstra is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Science at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, specializing in Systems Biology. His research focuses on understanding metabolic control and regulation in pathogens like Trypanosoma brucei and Schistosoma mansoni, as well as cancer cells (liver and head-and-neck cancers). He explores how metabolic pathways can be targeted for drug development with minimal host toxicity.
Teaching: He lectures in courses such as 'From Genome to Function' and 'Parasitology', supervising 5-10 bachelor/master students annually. He is the Program Director of the Biomolecular Sciences master’s program and Director of the Graduate School A-life.
Research Highlights: His work includes experimental and computational studies on parasite metabolism, including proof-of-concept drug targeting in trypanosomes and metabolic analysis in cancer cells. He contributed to identifying glutamate excretion’s role in nucleotide synthesis for cancer growth.
Awards: Received a 2022 grant for targeting metabolic pathways in head-and-neck cancer. Active in projects like the EraSysApp initiative linking metabolism and signaling in liver cancer.
Labs/Teams: Associated with AIMMS (Applied and Industrial Mathematics and Systems Biology group) and collaborates on systems biology and parasitology research.
