Junil Yoon is a PhD candidate at the University of Warwick's Department of Politics and International Studies (PAIS) and serves as a Guest Lecturer for courses on World Politics and U.S. Foreign Policy. His research focuses on Japan's foreign/security policy and national identity, employing ontological security and securitisation frameworks to analyze the impact of historical trauma narratives. He holds an MA in International Relations from Seoul National University and a BA in Business Administration/Politics from Kyung Hee University.

Research Interests: Junil explores how emotional narratives of national trauma shape Japan’s security policies and identity. His work bridges political theory with empirical analysis, examining shifts in Japanese foreign policy under Abe’s leadership and the ideological tensions within the Japanese Communist Party.
Teaching & Engagement:
- Guest Lecturer for modules on Japan’s foreign policy and security challenges (2022–2024).
- Language instructor for Japanese 4 (LL319) at the University of Warwick.
Awards:
- Recipient of the Japan Foundation Endowment Committee Fund Scholarship.
Professional Background: Prior to his PhD, Junil worked as a research associate at a South Korean think tank and served as an Army interpreter/intelligence officer in the ROK Joint Chiefs of Staff, attaining the rank of First Lieutenant.
