Junaed Sattar is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Minnesota, where he serves as founding director of the Minnesota Interactive Robotics and Vision Laboratory (IRV Lab). He is also affiliated with the Minnesota Robotics Institute and the MNDrive RSAM (Minnesota Discovery, Research, and Innovation Economy—Robotics, Sensors and Advanced Manufacturing) initiative. Currently on sabbatical for the 2024-2025 academic year, he is not accepting new students.
His research focuses on enabling safe and intuitive human-robot collaboration in unstructured environments through advanced perception systems. Key interests include understanding human intentions/actions, multi-modal sensory processing under degraded conditions, and field robotics applications across underwater, aerial, and terrestrial platforms. This work directly informs developments in healthcare robotics and autonomous driving systems.
The IRV Lab, housed at the Gemini-Huntley Robotics Research Laboratories in Shepherd Laboratories, investigates underwater robotics, human-robot collaboration, computer vision, and robotics applications in healthcare and autonomous systems. While supported by multiple sponsors, specific grant details are not disclosed in the provided text. Prospective researchers must review lab guidelines before contact due to the director's sabbatical status.
