Jun Ishihara is a Lecturer (US equivalent: Assistant Professor) in the Department of Bioengineering at Imperial College London's Faculty of Engineering. His research focuses on protein engineering, particularly in cancer immunotherapy, autoimmunity, and regenerative medicine. He holds affiliations with multiple networks, including the Cancer Technology Network, Centre for Neurotechnology, and Wound Healing and Regeneration Network.
Dr. Ishihara earned his PhD in stem cell biology from the University of Tokyo and completed postdoctoral training under Jeffrey Hubbell at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) and the University of Chicago. His lab develops targeted therapies to modulate tumor microenvironments, enhance immune activation, and improve wound healing through engineered cytokines and antibodies.
His research interests include:
- Engineering extracellular matrix (ECM)-targeted immunotherapies to reduce systemic toxicity
- Developing collagen-binding cytokines for localized delivery in cancer and autoimmune diseases
- Optimizing CAR-T cell therapies with tumor-specific targeting
- Designing growth factor delivery systems for regenerative medicine applications
Dr. Ishihara has co-founded three companies: Arrow Immune (cancer immunotherapy), HeioThera (anti-inflammatory therapeutics), and ScienceLounge (science outreach). He has published 25+ papers in high-impact journals like Nature Biomedical Engineering and holds 16 patents.
His work emphasizes translational research, with particular focus on:
- Collagen-binding drug carriers to enhance therapeutic efficacy
- Combination therapies for immunologically 'cold' tumors
- Engineering lymph node-targeted proteins for autoimmune disease treatment
