Julius O. Nyalwidhe, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Cell Biology at Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS). He serves as Director of the George L. Wright Jr. Center for Biomedical Proteomics. His research focuses on proteomics, glycomics, and mass spectrometry to study cancer progression, health disparities, and host-pathogen interactions. Dr. Nyalwidhe holds a PhD from Philips Universität Marburg, Germany, and completed postdoctoral training there. His lab investigates molecular mechanisms underlying prostate cancer severity, protein glycosylation, and the antimalarial parasite Plasmodium falciparum.
Research Interests:
- Cancer biology and biomarker discovery
- Protein post-translational modifications
- Host-pathogen interactions in malaria and other infectious diseases
- Proteomic and glycomic technologies
- Health disparities in cancer
Grant and Advising: Dr. Nyalwidhe mentors lab members including Stephen Mackay (Postdoc) and Naomi Hitefield (MS). Previous students include Tanya Burch (PhD) and Megan Watson (BS). His work has been published in high-impact journals like Nature Communications and Molecular & Cellular Proteomics.
Labs/Teams: Leads the Nyalwidhe Lab at EVMS, collaborating with the Leroy T. Canoles Jr. Cancer Research Center and the George L. Wright Jr. Center for Biomedical Proteomics.
