Dr. Julio Pedrassoli is an Assistant Professor at Western Michigan University's School of Environment, Geography and Sustainability, and previously held a Professor position at Brazil's Federal University of Bahia. He holds a PhD in Geography from the University of São Paulo (2016), an MSc in Physical Geography (2011), and a BSc in Geography (2010). His research focuses on geospatial technologies applied to urban and environmental analysis, including remote sensing for slum mapping, climate change impacts in the Global South, and urban sustainability.
Key affiliations include the MapBiomas Initiative (urban mapping team coordinator) and the International Geographical Union's Urban Commission. He has contributed to projects like MapBiomas Brasil (land-use mapping via machine learning) and the Climate Emergency analysis in Brazilian schools with Alana Institute. His work integrates satellite imagery, spectral analysis, and spatial modeling to address urban development challenges.
Key technical areas include spectral index development for water surfaces, machine learning for deprivation mapping, and UAV applications for land regularization in informal settlements. His publications span remote sensing journals (IEEE, European Journal of Remote Sensing) and interdisciplinary platforms like the ISPRS International Journal of Geo-Information.
