Julio Cesar Vega-Payne is an Assistant Professor of Classics at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). He holds a PhD from UCSB (2022) and served as a Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Fellow in Classics at UCLA before returning to UCSB in 2024. His research focuses on archaic Greek poetry, particularly Homeric Studies, with an emphasis on intersections between literature and environmental elements (e.g., earth, oceans, trees) in works like the Iliad, Odyssey, Hesiod’s poetry, and the Greek Epic Cycle. He explores how these texts frame human-environmental relationships and their relevance to modern ecological challenges.
Current projects include a monograph on time and environment in Homer’s Iliad. Additional interests span the reception of Greek mythology in Japanese manga/anime, Environmental Justice, and democratizing higher education access. He advises students on these topics and academic life broadly.
