Joel Christensen is a Professor of Classical and Early Mediterranean Studies at Brandeis University, with affiliations in Comparative Literature and Culture. He previously taught at the University of Texas at San Antonio (2007-2016) and has held fellowships and visiting roles at institutions such as Harvard University’s Center for Hellenic Studies, Phillips Exeter Academy, and Brandeis University.

Christensen’s research focuses on Greek epic poetry, mythology, linguistics, and literary theory, with particular emphasis on Homeric epics, archaic poetry, and the intersection of narrative and psychology. His work includes interdisciplinary approaches to myth, rhetoric, and cognitive modeling in ancient texts.
His publications include A Beginner’s Guide to Homer (2013), Homer’s Thebes (2019), A Commentary on the Homeric Battle of Frogs and Mice (2018), and The Many-Minded Man: the Odyssey, Psychology, and the Therapy of Epic (2020). These works explore themes in Homeric studies, literary criticism, and classical education, reflecting his broad engagement with ancient narratives and their modern interpretations.
