Julin Everett is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of French and Francophone Studies at Scripps College. A first-generation American and college graduate, she earned a B.A. in Classical Singing from Boston University (Magna Cum Laude) and a Ph.D. in Francophone Studies from UCLA. Her research focuses on postcolonial literature, queer studies, and visual studies, with a particular emphasis on Francophone African and Caribbean contexts. Dr. Everett’s work explores themes of trauma, identity, and resistance in colonial and postcolonial narratives.
Her academic career includes interdisciplinary projects like the installation Scene/Unseen (2017–2018), addressing the Holocaust through public art, and co-authored articles on topics such as gender ambiguity in postcolonial violence and autobiographical narratives of displacement. She teaches advanced French language and core courses, mentoring students in critical theory and cultural studies.
Dr. Everett has been recognized with awards including the Lloyd Jones Award for Advising Excellence and multiple fellowships from UCLA. Her research spans archival work in Senegal, translation projects of key Francophone texts, and contributions to College Literature and The French Review.
Her interests extend to creative endeavors such as sci-fi, gardening, and road trips, reflecting her interdisciplinary approach to scholarship and pedagogy.
