Julie Y. Chu is an Associate Professor of Anthropology and Social Sciences in the College at the University of Chicago, with associated faculty status at the Divinity School. Professor Chu specializes in the economic effects of industrialization on Chinese culture and conducts ethnographic fieldwork on Chinese urbanization and migration patterns.
Her research interests span sociocultural anthropology, globalization and transnational processes, mobility and migration, economy and value, ritual life, material culture, media and technology, state regulatory regimes, and China. These areas reflect her focus on understanding how industrialization and regulatory systems shape cultural practices and social structures, particularly in Chinese contexts.
