Professor Julie Willis is a prominent academic and Dean of the Faculty of Architecture, Building & Planning at The University of Melbourne. Her expertise spans the history of Australian architecture (1890–1950), modern hospital design, and the intersection of architecture with civic identity and equity. She leads the Australian Centre for Architectural History, Urban and Cultural Heritage (ACAHUCH) and has authored major works including the Encyclopedia of Australian Architecture (2012) and Designing School: Space, Place and Pedagogy (2017).
Her research focuses on architectural knowledge transmission, hospital design’s impact on patient wellbeing, and equity in the profession. Awards include the Australian Institute of Architects Bates Smart Award (twice). She served as Pro Vice Chancellor (Research Capability) at the University of Melbourne (2013–2016), overseeing research strategy and ethics.
Professor Willis chairs editorial boards for journals like Architectural Theory Review and advises the Australian Research Council. Her current projects include a new history of Australian architecture and studies on hospital design innovation.
