Julie Wharton is a Senior Lecturer in the University of Winchester, specializing in inclusive education and Special Educational Needs (SEN). She joined the university in 2014 after roles as an SEND Inspector and Advanced Skills Teacher. Her research focuses on refugee inclusion, educational policies, and teacher practices. She holds a PhD (2023) exploring inclusive pedagogies for displaced children and an MA in Special Educational Needs (2003). A Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, she leads the SENCo NPQ program and has authored/co-authored over 20 peer-reviewed publications and books on education equity.
Research & Publications: Key works include Decommissioning Normal: COVID-19 and Learning Disabilities (2021), and contributions to Leading on Inclusion (2021). Recent presentations address refugee education and pandemic impacts on SEND partnerships.
Awards: Recognized as Inspirational Lecturer (2015) and Outstanding Lecturer (2022). She collaborates with the Special Educational Needs Policy Research Forum and the ITIRE Erasmus+ project.
Professional Roles: External examiner for Nottingham Trent University’s SENCo program. Provides consultancy for schools and local authorities on inclusive practices.
