Julie Weiskopf serves as Associate Professor of History and Department Chair of International Studies in Gonzaga University's College of Arts & Sciences, joining the faculty in 2018 as the department's first Africanist specializing in Tanzanian social history.
Her educational background includes:
- PhD in African History, University of Minnesota
- BA in History and English, Seattle University
Dr. Weiskopf's research centers on colonial and postcolonial Tanzanian social history, with documented investigations into forced resettlement schemes, wildlife conservation, public health interventions, and literacy campaigns. Her fieldwork includes a 10-month Fulbright US Scholar residency at the University of Dar es Salaam, where she taught courses while researching 1970s adult literacy initiatives. This work demonstrates consistent engagement with the intersection of state policy, environmental management, and community health in East Africa.
Her publication record shows progressive specialization in Tanzanian historical themes across seven major works between 2008-2017, with increasing focus on environmental and public health dimensions in her most recent articles.
She has received the Fulbright US Scholar award for her research contributions.
Dr. Weiskopf teaches diverse courses including World Civilization, Colonial Africa, African Health and Healing, African Environmental History, African History through Film, African Nationalism, and Rwandan Genocide studies, demonstrating commitment to interdisciplinary curriculum development as evidenced by her co-authored work on public history graduate pedagogy.
Born and raised in Spokane, she maintains active community ties while pursuing personal interests in hiking with her dog, international travel, and culinary arts.
