Julie Trueman is an Assistant Professor and Year 3 Tutor in the School of Design at Northumbria University. She holds a unique hybrid background as a medically qualified doctor (MBChB, 1997) and a professional interior designer (BA(Hons), 2006), having transitioned to academia in 2009 after a 14-year career as a hospital doctor and Wellcome Trust Research Fellow. Her research integrates spatial design with healthcare outcomes, sustainability, and learning environments, with notable collaborations with the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation. She co-led the Bauhaus Open Studio Programme (2018–2023) and contributed to projects like “Schools of Departure: A Digital Atlas of Bauhaus Education after 1933” funded by the German Ministry of Infrastructure.
Her academic roles include Programme Leader, International Admissions Tutor, and member of the Design School’s Ethics Committee. She established a material sample library for students and maintains strong alumni ties. Awards include the Distinguished Teaching Fellow Award (2022) and an Enhancement Project Award. Her work bridges design pedagogy with historical and architectural influences, emphasizing atmosphere, spatial impact, and biophilic principles in educational settings.
Research interests span the legacy of Bauhaus pedagogy, digital ethnography in design education, and the proxemics of learning spaces. She actively engages in conferences and workshops, contributing to global design discourse through initiatives like the AMPS San Francisco conference (2024).
