Julie Nygaard Solvang

Julie Nygaard Solvang is a PhD Fellow at the Department of Anthropology, University of Copenhagen, affiliated with the Faculty of Social Sciences. Her research focuses on the irregular trade of discarded electronics between Europe and West Africa, particularly in Ghana's informal refurbishing and e-waste management sector.

This research examines how e-waste is transformed into valuable secondary raw materials within global supply chains, while simultaneously creating health risks and environmental pollution. She is part of the ILLECO project, which investigates green transition challenges posed by exploitative mineral practices in Ghana.

Her work traces transnational flows of digital waste and analyzes the socio-environmental impacts of informal recycling economies.

Her 2025 publication in Tidsskriftet Antropologi serves as an introduction to crisis frameworks in anthropological analysis.
