Dr Julie Nicol is the CAIGE Coordinator at the University of Sydney's School of Life and Environmental Sciences. She leads the International Cereal Germplasm Improvement Program (CAIGE), focusing on wheat, durum wheat, and barley improvement under the direction of Prof Richard Trethowan. Nicol holds a B.Ag.Sc (1st Class Honours) and PhD from the University of Adelaide's Waite Campus, specializing in cereal pathology and breeding.
Her career includes 13 years at the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre (CIMMYT), working in Mexico and Turkey. Research interests include germplasm enhancement, soil health in rainfed systems, and combating pathogens like Crown Rot and Cereal Nematodes. She has coordinated multinational projects and trained professionals globally.
Publications span cereal disease resistance mechanisms, nematode management, and international germplasm evaluation strategies. Nicol is noted for her collaborative approach to agricultural challenges, bridging private, public, and international sectors.
