Dr. Julie M. Johnson is an Associate Professor in the Department of Art and Art History at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), affiliated with the College of Liberal and Fine Arts. She earned her Ph.D. in Art History from the University of Chicago (1998) and an M.A. in Art History from the University of Iowa (1988). Her research focuses on Viennese modernism, gender and art, and museum practices, particularly for women artists around 1900.

She is the author of The Memory Factory: The Forgotten Women Artists of Vienna 1900 (Purdue University Press, 2012), which reclaims the legacy of overlooked female artists from the early 20th century.
Her scholarly contributions include peer-reviewed articles in key journals like Austrian History Yearbook and Woman’s Art Journal, as well as chapters in exhibition catalogs such as those for the Belvedere Museum in Vienna. She has co-edited forums on museums and material culture, emphasizing the role of institutions in shaping artistic narratives.
