Julie Lavoie is a Full Professor and Department Director at the School of Kinesiology and Physical Activity Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, Université de Montréal. She holds affiliations with the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine and leads the Cardiometabolic Phenotyping Core at the CRCHUM. Her research focuses on hypertension, preeclampsia, obesity, and exercise physiology, using animal models and molecular biology approaches. Key projects include investigating the renin-angiotensin system's role in pregnancy complications and developing biomarkers for preeclampsia. She has supervised over 20 graduate students and holds prestigious awards, including the 2006 Prix du Nouveau Chercheur de l’Année. Her work bridges basic science and clinical applications, with a focus on translational research in cardiomometabolic health.
- Affiliations: CRCHUM, CRRF, CMDO, and international collaborations.
- Education: Ph.D. in Exercise Science (2000), Université de Montréal.
Research Interests: Mechanisms of preeclampsia, exercise interventions in pregnancy, adipose tissue biology, and genetic factors in hypertension. Her studies employ transgenic mouse models and human cohort analyses to explore therapeutic targets and preventive strategies.
Notable Contributions: Identified novel roles of the (pro)renin receptor in obesity and cardiometabolic risk, developed mouse models of preeclampsia, and evaluated exercise's benefits in pregnancy. Active in grant initiatives and academic governance, including committee roles at the Université de Montréal and Quebec-wide research networks.
Awards: Multiple grants from FRQNT, IRSC, and industry partners. Her work has led to 50+ peer-reviewed publications and international conference presentations.
