Julie Greene is a labor and migration historian at the University of Maryland, specializing in transnational and global histories of labor, immigration, and U.S. imperialism. Her work explores intersections of class, capitalism, and working-class formation in the context of American global power.
Research Interests:
- Labor migration across imperial borders
- U.S. global expansionism (1890–1934)
- Working-class experiences in infrastructure projects like the Panama Canal
Recent Articles: Focus on themes such as class analysis in labor history, Caribbean worker migrations, critiques of neoliberalism, and the role of labor in reshaping U.S. imperial projects. Keywords include transnational history, capitalism, and deindustrialization.

Editorial & Leadership Roles: Founding Reviews Editor of Labor: Studies in Working-Class History of the Americas, co-founder and former Director (2011–2021) of the Center for Global Migration Studies at UMD, and Editor of the University of Illinois Press’s Working-Class in American History series since 2015. She is currently a Distinguished Lecturer for the Organization of American Historians.
Current Projects: Two book projects: (1) Box 25: Into the Archive of Caribbean Workers (memoirs of canal workers and historical silences), and (2) Movable Empire: Labor Migrations and the Making of U.S. Global Power, 1890–1934, examining labor migration across the Caribbean, Central America, Hawaii, and the Philippines.
