Julie Gard is a Professor of Writing in the Department of Writing, Language & Literature at the University of Wisconsin-Superior. She holds a B.A. in English from Grinnell College (1995) and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from the University of Minnesota (2000). As a Fulbright Graduate Fellow in Vladivostok, Russia, she explored cross-cultural writing practices. Her creative work spans prose poetry, lyric essays, and flash fiction, with publications including I Think I Know You (2023) and Home Studies (2016). She advises the college literary magazine The Nemadji Review and teaches creative, professional, and academic writing.
Her research focuses on genre boundaries in creative writing, particularly the distinctions between lyric essays and prose poetry series. She actively explores connections between writing, environmental studies, and well-being. Key interests include experimental writing forms, cross-genre narratives, and the role of creativity in pedagogy.
Awardees include the 2023 INDIES Book of the Year Poetry Finalist and 2021 Advisor of the Year (UW-Superior). She presents nationally on topics like writing pedagogy and environmental narratives, including a 2024 talk at the University of Arizona’s Conference on Writing and Well-being. Her creative works have appeared in journals such as Inside Higher Ed and Superstition Review.
In addition to academic roles, Gard engages with northern Minnesota’s literary and environmental communities, foraging locally and exploring interdisciplinary connections between place and creativity.
