Julie Fishell is a Lecturer of Acting and Directing at the University of California, Santa Barbara's Department of Theater and Dance. She holds a B.F.A. from the University of Evansville, a Diploma from The Juilliard School's Drama Division, and an M.F.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Her research focuses on Stanislavsky-based acting techniques, mask work (LeCoq Neutral Mask), and performance of heightened texts. She explores Grotowski’s early methodologies and Chekhov’s plays. Current interests include farce articulation and contemporary actor training.
Ms. Fishell has directed over 20 productions, including Hedda Gabler, Dead Man Walking, and The Cherry Orchard. She has performed in over 30 plays regionally, Off-Broadway, and internationally, including roles in Cabaret, August: Osage County, and Shakespearean works.

She taught at UNC Chapel Hill for 20+ years as a professor and founded the PlayMakers Summer Youth Conservatory. Currently teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in acting and directing at UCSB, including advanced acting techniques, audition preparation, and directing practicums.
Recent international work includes teaching with the Prague Shakespeare Company (Czech Republic) and the Theatre of Changes program in Athens, Greece.
