Dr. Julie Baker Phillips is an Associate Professor of Biology and Academic Area Leader of Science at Cumberland University's Labry School of Science, Technology, and Business. She holds a Ph.D. in Quantitative and Systems Biology from UC Merced and has taught at Cumberland since 2017 after completing a postdoc at Vanderbilt University under a March of Dimes grant.
- B.S., Middle Tennessee State University
- M.S., Middle Tennessee State University
- Ph.D., University of California, Merced
Dr. Phillips' research focuses on evolutionary biology and molecular genetics, particularly the genetic constraints governing tRNA evolution and reproductive life history traits. Her work spans comparative physiology, systems biology, and evolutionary medicine, analyzing gene families and their links to domestication and pregnancy outcomes.
Her recent publications explore evolutionary patterns in tRNA, allometric scaling in Carnivorans, and genomic associations with reproductive variability in dogs and humans. Key themes include molecular evolution, structural biology, and functional genomics.
- Bobby Nichols Professorship
- March of Dimes Grant
Dr. Phillips mentors motivated students in research and contributes to public science education through theatrical demonstrations for elementary schools. She is affiliated with Sigma Xi, the Society for Evolutionary Medicine and Public Health, and the Tennessee Academy of Sciences.
