Julie ASSOULY is a Lecturer - HDR (Habilitation to Supervise Research) in American civilization at the University of Artois, Faculty of Letters and Arts. She holds a PhD in American Studies from Université Toulouse-Jean Jaurès (2010) and a BA in History from the University of British Columbia (2003). Her HDR (2023), titled “Wes Anderson, transatlantic filmmaker”, explores the transnational dimensions of American cinema.
Her research focuses on contemporary American cinema, particularly the works of the Coen Brothers and Wes Anderson, with an emphasis on visual intertextuality, American cultural myths, and historical representation. She co-directs the Praxis and Aesthetics of the Arts research team and oversees the Cinema Series at Artois Press Université. Key publications include monographs on the Coen Brothers (2012) and a forthcoming book on Wes Anderson (CNRS, 2024).
ASSOULY actively engages in academic outreach, organizing conferences on topics like New Hollywood cinema and American political representation. She has contributed to France Culture, Arte, and RTBF programs discussing American cinema and politics, including analyses of the Coen Brothers’ work and the 2020 U.S. election. Her teaching spans American civilization, film adaptation, and U.S. political history at undergraduate and graduate levels.
Recent projects include studying working-class representation in Pennsylvania-based films and analyzing the legacy of New Hollywood. She has been a visiting professor at the University of Pennsylvania (pending pandemic delays) and collaborates internationally on interdisciplinary cinema research.
