Julianne Siegfriedt

Julianne Siegfriedt is an Assistant Professor in both the Women & Gender Studies Program and Sociology Department at the University of Southern Maine (USM), part of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. She joined USM in Spring 2017 and has taught courses in Sociology, Women and Gender Studies, and Social and Behavioral Sciences. Prior to USM, she taught at Southern New Hampshire University and the University of Massachusetts-Boston.

Education:

• Ph.D. in Sociology, University of Massachusetts-Boston (2019)
• M.A. in Applied Sociology, University of Massachusetts-Boston (2011)
• B.A. in Sociology & Psychology, Clark University (2007)

Research Focus: Her work examines the sociology of gender and health, with a focus on sex trafficking, sex work, and marginalized groups' access to services. She studies institutional barriers affecting individuals who have sold sex, those experiencing homelessness with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders, and community reentry for formerly incarcerated individuals. Her research emphasizes intersectionality and systemic inequalities impacting health, violence exposure, and institutional access.

Teaching: Courses include Introduction to Sociology, Gender and Health, Family Violence, Sociology of the Family, and interdisciplinary Women and Gender Studies topics. All courses integrate an intersectional sociological lens.
