Julianne Quinn is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Virginia's School of Engineering and Applied Science. Her research focuses on advancing optimization and simulation methods for water resources systems, aiming to protect communities and ecosystems from environmental hazards. She holds a B.S. from Columbia University (2011) and a Ph.D. from Cornell University (2017).
Her work emphasizes risk and uncertainty analysis, multi-objective optimization, and the integration of advanced sensing/forecasting into decision-making frameworks. Key areas include flood/drought management, pollution reduction, and climate resilience. Recent projects involve the Colorado River Basin, urban heat adaptation, and Appalachian renewable energy development.
Notable publications explore MCMC algorithm effectiveness, equity in water management, and hydropower adaptation. Awards include the 2024 Best Policy Paper Award and 2021 UVA Teaching Award. She leads the Quinn Research Group and collaborates on grants like 'Coordinating Water Markets' (NSF-funded) and 'Climate Collaborative: Appalachian Renewables'.
Teaching responsibilities include SYS 4021 (Linear Statistical Models), CE 4110 (Environmental Systems Modeling), and CE 6280 (Stochastic Hydrology). Her research bridges computational methods with real-world sustainability challenges, prioritizing equitable outcomes for vulnerable populations.
