Dr Julianne K. Viola is a postdoctoral Research Associate at the Centre for Higher Education Research and Scholarship (CHERS) within Imperial College London's Central Faculty. She leads the Social Ties and Student Lives Project (ongoing since 2025) and previously directed the Belonging, Engagement, and Community (BEC) and Imperial Bursary projects from 2019-2024.

Research Interests: Dr Viola specializes in adolescent civic identity formation in digital environments, examining how social media shapes political engagement and activism among youth. Her work bridges education systems analysis, pedagogical innovation, and sociological perspectives on community belonging, with emphasis on student perception surveys and equity-focused educational interventions.

Collaborations: Dr Viola partners with Harvard University, UC Santa Barbara, and Panorama Education to develop evidence-based tools used by 3.2 million students across 4,800 schools. She also contributes to the Oxford Internet Institute's Transmedia Literacy project and advises New Zealand's Education Hub.
Research Units: As a core member of CHERS, she advances institutional research on student experience through the Education Evaluation Toolkit and large-scale projects measuring belonging and bursary impacts.
