Dr. Juliana Ranches is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Animal and Rangeland Sciences at Oregon State University, based at the Eastern Oregon Agricultural Research Center in Burns. Her program targets livestock producers with a focus on improving production efficiency and sustainability through four research pillars: (1) nutrition, (2) health and welfare, (3) production management, and (4) precision technology.
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree (2013) – Universidade Estadual Paulista-Botucatu
- Master’s degree (2016) – University of Florida
- Doctorate (2019) – University of Florida
Her research interests span trace mineral nutrition, precision livestock farming, wildfire impacts on cattle, and sustainable feed alternatives like hemp biomass. She employs RFID technology to analyze mineral intake patterns and virtual fencing for grazing management.
Recent research trends emphasize micromineral metabolism in cattle breeds, methane emission mitigation, and postnatal growth optimization through maternal nutrition. Her work bridges applied animal science with environmental adaptation in beef and dairy systems.
Scientific awards include multiple recognitions at the University of Florida: Top 5 Ph.D. Student (2019, 2018), Top-Up Award (2019), and FAES High Impact Publication (2017).
She accepts graduate students in the Animal and Rangeland Sciences Department and has secured grants for wildfire smoke research and seaweed-based feed studies. Her extension efforts include Beef Cow-Calf Management Guides, RancHER webinars for women in beef production, and livestock disease traceability programs.
Dr. Ranches is actively involved in outreach initiatives, including wildfire preparedness webinars, cattle management workshops, and publications addressing home meat processing and sustainable grazing practices.
