Julian X. ZHU is a Professor and holder of the Université de Montréal Research Chair in Polymeric Biomaterials. He leads a research group focused on developing novel polymers for biomedical and industrial applications. His work includes hydrogels, degradable polymers, and nanomaterials. He earned his PhD in Biochemistry and Chemistry from McGill University in 1988.
Key research areas:
- Biomaterials design and characterization
- Thermoresponsive polymers for drug delivery
- Bile acid-derived materials
- Nanoparticle composites for biomedical use
His recent studies explore stimuli-responsive hydrogels, shape-memory polymers, and CO2 capture systems. Over 30 students have graduated under his supervision, with active projects supported by grants from CRSNG, FRQNT, and industrial partnerships. He collaborates with researchers across engineering, chemistry, and biomedicine.
Notable platforms:
- Centre Québécois sur les Matériaux Fonctionnels (CQMF)
- Process Engineering of Emerging Nano-Medicines (PrEEmiuM)
His lab develops materials for tissue engineering, dental composites, and controlled drug release systems. He actively publishes in ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces, Biomaterials, and Journal of Materials Chemistry.
