Julian Wheatley is a Senior Lecturer Emeritus in Chinese at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), part of the Global Languages department. He holds a PhD and MA in Linguistics from UC Berkeley and a BA in Linguistics from Columbia College. His career included teaching positions at UC Berkeley, California State University at Fresno, Cornell University, and MIT (1997-2007). He served as a Fulbright Fellow in Singapore (1986-87).
Research focuses on Sino-Tibetan languages' historical and descriptive aspects, and pedagogy in foreign language education. He coordinated MIT's Chinese Language and Culture Program, which evolved from the Foreign Languages and Literatures section.
His academic journey includes studies in Taiwan and teaching roles in Hong Kong. He specialized in Burmese linguistics for his PhD dissertation.
