Julian Dunne

Professor Julian Dunne is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Sussex, affiliated with the School of Engineering and Informatics and the Department of Engineering and Design. He leads the 30-member Dynamics, Control, and Vehicle (DCV) Research Group and holds administrative roles including Head of the DCV Group, Chair of the Undergraduate Module Assessment Board, and Deputy Chair of the Undergraduate Progress and Award Board. His research focuses on dynamics and control in low CO₂ road transport, including vehicle dynamics, engine efficiency, NVH reduction, and optimal control strategies for energy systems.

Education: BSc (Newcastle), PhD (Bristol), Chartered Engineer (CEng), Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (FIMechE). He is also on the editorial boards of three journals: Journal of Sound and Vibration, Vehicles, and Journal of Autonomous Intelligence.

Research interests span vehicle, engine, and rotor dynamics; nonlinear dynamic analysis; optimal control (e.g., KERS); and CO₂ reduction via energy-efficient powertrains, lightweighting, and drag-reduction technologies. His work is funded by EPSRC, EU, Jaguar Land Rover, Ford, Ricardo, and Denso.

Recent publications emphasize spray evaporative cooling for powertrain thermal management, free-piston engine dynamics, and vibration-temperature interactions in automotive systems. Grant activities include projects on evaporative cooling systems (EPSRC, Ricardo) and control strategies for IC engines (EPSRC).

Teaching includes modules on systems analysis and control, mechanical dynamics, and vehicle engineering at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The DCV Group collaborates across disciplines to address climate change through advanced modeling, control systems, and sustainable transport solutions.
