Dr Julian Dobson is a Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Regional Economic and Social Research (CRESR) at Sheffield Hallam University. His research focuses on urban sustainability, social equity, and institutional change, with particular emphasis on town centres, urban greenspaces, and the civic role of universities. He leads the High Streets Research Network and contributes to initiatives like the National Civic Impact Accelerator. His work bridges academic research, policy, and practice, aiming to address systemic challenges in urban development and environmental justice.
Education: PhD in Urban Sustainability from CRESR (2017). Prior to academia, he worked in journalism and consultancy. Key affiliations include CRESR, the Civic University Network, and collaborations with organizations like the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Power to Change.
Research priorities include:
- High Street regeneration and community-led initiatives
- Evaluation of green social prescribing and urban nature programs
- Civic impact frameworks for universities
- Policy analysis of post-pandemic urban spaces
Recent projects include evaluating the Green Social Prescribing pilots, leading the High Streets Research Network, and developing the Civic Impact Framework. His interdisciplinary approach emphasizes evidence-based solutions for socially just and sustainable urban environments.
