Julian Bunn

Julian Bunn is a Principal Computational Scientist and Member of the Professional Staff at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), working in the Seismological Laboratory under a Cooperative Agreement with the USGS. He is a Fellow of the UK Institute of Physics, with prior roles at CERN, the Max Planck Institute, and the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. He holds a PhD in Particle Physics from the University of Sheffield and a B.Sc. in Physics from the University of Manchester.

Research Interests span Seismology, Earthquake Early Warning Systems, and Computational Science. His work includes the ShakeAlert system, the PLUM algorithm for shaking predictions, and distributed sensor networks in Costa Rica and Lake Tahoe. He applies Machine Learning to scientific data and has developed software for medical sensors and seismic detection.
