Dr. Julian Brash is an Associate Professor of Anthropology at Montclair State University's College of Humanities and Social Sciences. His research focuses on urban development, neoliberal governance, and the politics of space, particularly through studies of New York City, including the High Line park. He has held leadership roles in academic societies like the Society for the Anthropology of North America and co-leads a major urban anthropology project with Dr. Jeff Maskovsky. Brash earned his PhD from CUNY Graduate Center (2006), a Master's from an unnamed institution, and a BA in Political Science from Haverford College. He teaches courses in urban anthropology, cultural theory, and directs Montclair's Urban Humanities program.
His 2011 book Bloomberg's New York critiques Mayor Bloomberg's corporate urban governance. Current research examines the High Line's sociopolitical impact, funded by NEH and NSF. He also writes Urban Anthropology: The Basics, due in 2026. Brash's work appears in journals like Urban Anthropology and Antipode, and he served as editor-in-chief of City & Society. His teaching includes interdisciplinary Honors courses on global urbanization and the Anthropology of Public Space.
Brash's grants include projects on rethinking urban anthropology in light of contemporary dynamics, supported by the School of Advanced Research and CUNY. Office hours are held regularly, emphasizing accessibility for students. His research bridges anthropology with geography, exploring how urban spaces reflect economic policies, cultural aesthetics, and political struggles.
