Julia Wolfe is a Professor of Music Composition and Artistic Director of Music Composition at the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, New York University. She holds a PhD from Princeton University, an MM from Yale School of Music, and a BA from the Residential College at the University of Michigan. Her work bridges music composition with interdisciplinary themes, including labor history, gender equality, and climate change. Wolfe is a founder and co-artistic director of the music collective Bang on a Can.
Her research interests center on creating multimedia and orchestral works that explore societal issues. Notable works include Anthracite Fields (Pulitzer Prize, 2015) and unEarth (2023), addressing labor history and climate change. Collaborations with theater artists, architects, and filmmakers underscore her cross-disciplinary approach.
