Associate Professor Julia Treleaven is a Clinical Associate Professor at the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences within the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Behavioural Sciences at the University of Queensland. She is also an Affiliate of the Centre for Innovation in Pain and Health Research (CIPHeR). With over two decades of dedicated research in cervical spine disorders, she has established herself as a leading international expert in whiplash, neck pain, and related conditions.
Dr. Treleaven earned both her Bachelor of Physiotherapy and Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Queensland, with her doctoral research in 2004 focusing on the neck's influence on sensorimotor control. This foundational work has guided her extensive research program examining the cervical spine's role in producing symptoms beyond pain.
As co-leader of the Neck and Head Research Unit (NAHRU), formerly known as the Cervical Spine and Whiplash Research Unit, Dr. Treleaven directs research exploring how the cervical spine contributes to dizziness, visual disturbances, and effects on head and eye movement control and postural stability. Her work has expanded to include headache disorders, temporomandibular disorders (TMD), and concussion. She is particularly focused on developing clinical tests for differential diagnosis to identify when the cervical spine is implicated in various symptoms.
Analysis of Dr. Treleaven's recent publications (2024-2025) reveals a strong emphasis on clinical applications, with significant attention to systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and safety considerations in cervical spine management. Her research increasingly addresses the relationship between cervical impairments and conditions like headache, dizziness, and TMD, with a growing focus on evidence-based clinical assessment tools.
- Keynote and invited presentations internationally across multiple continents
- Convening 3 focused symposiums for the International Federation of Orthopaedic Manipulative Therapists
- Authorship of influential texts including "Management of Neck Pain Disorders: a research informed approach" (Elsevier, 2018) with approximately 6,000 sales and translations into 4 languages
- Invitations to present professional development courses globally
As an active supervisor, Dr. Treleaven mentors multiple PhD and Master's students across diverse topics including cervical spine-related dizziness, upper cervical hypermobility, TMD management, and headache disorders. She currently leads significant research projects including SPINEPASS (2024-2028) investigating self-management techniques for persistent headache after concussion, and a project implementing integrated psychological and physical care for Australians after road traffic injury (2023-2027).
Dr. Treleaven runs the laboratory for the Neck and Head Research Unit, ensuring proper training of personnel and adherence to risk assessments. Her work effectively bridges clinical practice and research, with direct applications to patient care in areas like whiplash, cervicogenic dizziness, and post-concussion syndrome, while maintaining an active clinical role as a part-time physiotherapist.
