Julia Telfer is a Senior Lecturer in Mental Health Nursing at the School of Health Sciences, University of Greenwich, where she has served since 2007. She coordinates pre-registration undergraduate and postgraduate programmes including Paramedic Science, Safeguarding, Psychology and Criminology, Ethics, Health Visiting, and Midwifery, and leads the BSc Hons Mental Health Work (Top-up) post qualifying degree.
Her research focuses on forensic mental health nursing within prison and secure settings, emphasizing service innovation, ethical care frameworks, and interdisciplinary collaboration with psychology and criminology. She pioneered NHS Beacon Status-recognized prison mental health services and integrates safeguarding principles across clinical education.
Julia Telfer has received significant recognition:
- Butler Trust Award (2004) from HRH Princess Anne for transformative prisoner mental healthcare
- NHS Beacon Status (2004) for her managed prison mental health service
- Faculty of Education and Health award for Motivating and Inspiring Others
She actively mentors students, nominating four for Student Nursing Times Awards with one overall win and two shortlistings, while championing the Mental Health Nursing Society and student-led awareness initiatives. Her clinical leadership spans placement coordination across Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust, Kent and Medway Partnership Trust, schools, prisons, and independent sectors as Key Account Manager for Kent and Medway Partnership Trust.
