Dr. Julia Roth is an Associate Professor of American Studies with a specialization in Gender Studies at Bielefeld University's Faculty of Linguistics and Literature. Currently serving as an Akademische Oberrätin since October 2023, she will assume a Visiting Professor position for Anglophone Literatures and Cultures at the University of Vienna during the winter semester of 2024-25. Her institutional affiliations span multiple research centers including the Center for InterAmerican Studies, the Interdisciplinary Center for Gender Studies (IZG), and the Center for Uncertainty Studies.

Dr. Roth's educational trajectory includes postdoctoral research at Freie Universität Berlin (2011-2013) focusing on "Interdependent Inequalities in Latin America" and at Bielefeld University (2013-2018) examining "The Americas as Space of Entanglement(s)."
Her research program centers on intersectional approaches to gender, race, and power dynamics, with particular attention to transnational feminist movements in the Americas. She has spearheaded significant research initiatives including the ZiF Research Group on "Global Contestations of Women's and Gender Rights" (2020-2021) and the DFG Graduate School "Experiencing Gender." Her scholarship critically engages with right-wing populism's gendered dimensions, new feminist movements across the Americas, and the complex interplay between gender, citizenship, and migration.
