Julia Ott is an Associate Professor of History at Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts, The New School. Her research focuses on the history of capitalism, race, economic inequality, and financial systems. She holds a BA from Princeton University (1997) and a PhD from Yale University (2007). Ott’s work challenges myths about venture capital and examines the racial dimensions of wealth through tax policies. She has authored books such as *When Wall Street Met Main Street* (2011), which won the Vincent DeSantis Prize, and is currently finalizing manuscripts on racial wealth disparities and venture capital’s origins. Ott’s interdisciplinary approach includes editorial roles for *Dissent*, co-editing *Studies in the History of U.S. Capitalism*, and co-directing the Robert L. Heilbroner Center for Capitalism Studies.
Her research interests span capitalism’s intersection with race, labor, and neoliberalism. Recent articles explore tax policy’s role in racial inequality and venture capital’s ideological impact. Ott has received grants from New America, the Russell Sage Foundation, and the Institute for Advanced Study. She advises MA/PhD students and contributes to public discourse through writings in *The Nation*, *Public Books*, and media appearances on BBC, NPR, and PBS. Ott’s collaborations include curatorial projects like the *Museum of Capitalism* installation and advising the Museum of the City of New York’s *New York at Its Core* exhibit.
Her teaching emphasizes critical engagement with capitalism’s past and present. Upcoming courses include *Intro to Capitalism Studies* and *Slavery and Anti-Slavery*. Ott’s academic leadership includes roles as a Distinguished Lecturer for the Organization of American Historians and advisor to documentary films.
