Dr. Julia Moriarty is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences and a Fellow at the Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research (INSTAAR) at the University of Colorado Boulder. She leads the Coastal Oceanography Modeling Group, focusing on sediment and nutrient transport in coastal environments.
- PhD in Coastal Oceanography from Virginia Institute of Marine Sciences (2017)
- Research spans estuaries, continental shelves, deltas, and wetlands, integrating hydrodynamic-sediment-biogeochemical modeling.
Her work examines coupled physical-biogeochemical processes in coastal systems, particularly how sediment resuspension affects water quality, hypoxia, and nutrient budgets. Recent projects include DOE-funded research on coastal urban flooding and machine learning applications for predicting pollutant fluxes in Baltimore.
Dr. Moriarty’s publications address coastal acidification, storm impacts on sediment dynamics, and marsh resilience, with key contributions to 3D coupled modeling frameworks. Her group develops predictive tools for climate adaptation in coastal zones.
Scientific Awards
- DOE Early Career Research Program (2023)
- Mendenhall Postdoctoral Fellowship (2017)
- Community Surface Dynamics Modeling System Student Modeler Award (2017)
She teaches Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences courses, including Coastal Oceanography and Numerical Methods, and mentors graduate students in coastal systems research.
