Julia Malitska is a historian at Södertörn University, affiliated with the Department of History and Contemporary Studies. Her research focuses on imperial/post-imperial histories of Eastern Europe and biopolitics of food/environment in 19th-20th century Europe.
- PhD in History (2017)
- Baltic Sea Foundation-funded research (2022–2025)
Her research spans two overlapping domains: imperial history (particularly Ukraine and Black Sea Steppe) and biopolitical intersections of science, food, and environment. She investigates how dietary debates, agricultural policies, and public health discourses shaped political and cultural transformations in Eastern Europe.
Julia’s publications reveal trends in imperial governance, nutritional activism, and transnational knowledge exchange. Her work bridges micro-historical studies (e.g., marriage practices) with macro-historical processes (e.g., pan-European health debates).
She has conducted postdoctoral research on vegetarianism in the Russian Empire and teaches history courses at Södertörn University. Her current project analyzes meat-related health discourses in Eastern Europe, funded by the Baltic Sea Foundation.
