Dr. Julia M Gossard serves as a Professor of History and the Associate Dean for Faculty Success in the College of Arts and Science (ArtSci) at Utah State University. Previously, she served as the Associate Dean for Research in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences from 2022 until its merger into ArtSci in 2025. Her academic journey includes a PhD and MA from the University of Texas at Austin and a BA from Southern Methodist University.
Dr. Gossard specializes in the history of childhood and youth, with research spanning Europe and the United States. Her current scholarly interests include higher educational pedagogical practices, high-impact teaching methods, and the application of generative artificial intelligence in classroom settings. She also investigates the construction of modern girlhood and the concept of 'double age' in historical contexts. Her methodological approach combines quantitative and qualitative research techniques to explore societal transformations through the lens of childhood experiences.
Her recent publications reveal a strong trajectory toward the intersection of historical scholarship and educational innovation, with increasing focus on AI applications in teaching history. The publications span historical analysis of childhood in French and American contexts, pedagogical frameworks for student success, and innovative applications of technology in historical education.
