Dr. Julia Leuthold is a Lecturer at ETH Zurich, affiliated with the Department of Geotechnical Engineering under the College of Architecture, Civil and Environmental Engineering. She serves as the head of the rock laboratory and holds a prominent role in the field of underground construction. Her research focuses on hydromechanical anisotropy of porous rock materials, rock mechanics, and tunneling technologies.
Leuthold completed her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in civil engineering at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). She earned her PhD in 2020 from KIT's Institute for Soil and Rock Mechanics, where her dissertation explored the hydromechanical properties of porous rock materials. Post-PhD, she worked as a project leader in rock mechanics and tunneling at the National Cooperative for the Disposal of Radioactive Waste before joining ETH Zurich in January 2025 as an established researcher.
Her professional memberships include the Swiss Tunneling Society (since 2023) and the Arbeitskreis 3.3 'Versuchstechnik Fels' of the German Geotechnical Society (DGGT, since 2021). She received the DYNAmore Prize in 2018 for her exceptional Master's thesis at KIT.
Leuthold's advising and grant activities are not explicitly detailed, but her role as head of the rock laboratory indicates ongoing research leadership. She is closely associated with laboratories focused on geotechnical experimentation and underground construction methodologies.
