Julia Kursell

Julia Kursell is a Professor of Musicology at the University of Amsterdam. Her research explores the intersections of musicology, the history of science, and acoustics, with a focus on the physiology of hearing and its influence on musical theory and aesthetics. She has contributed to historical epistemology and media studies, particularly examining the role of experimental practices in the development of music theory. During her time at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science (MPIWG) in Berlin, she collaborated with the research group 'Epistemes of Modern Acoustics' and co-organized a focus section on humanities and sciences in *Isis*. As an editor of *History of the Humanities*, she engages with interdisciplinary scholarship. Her funded projects include investigations into Helmholtz’s acoustics, Soviet-era hearing research, and post-1945 compositions from media historiography perspectives.
