Julia K. Walker is a Professor in the School of Nursing at Duke University with a joint appointment in Pulmonary Medicine. Her research investigates cellular mechanisms of lung diseases, particularly asthma, focusing on G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) pathophysiology and therapeutic applications.
Her educational background includes:
- Ph.D. from Queen's University
- M.Sc. from Queen's University
- B.Ed. from University of Ottawa
- B.Sc. from Mount Allison University
Dr. Walker's expertise centers on beta-arrestin-mediated GPCR signaling in asthma, specifically examining how β-2-adrenoceptor ligands and biased signaling pathways can develop treatments that bronchodilate airways without exacerbating symptoms. Her work bridges molecular pharmacology and respiratory physiology to address critical gaps in asthma therapeutics, with translational potential for improving patient quality of life.
She has received multiple honors including the Ann Woolcock memorial award, ATS Young Investigator award, Outstanding MSN Faculty award, and DUNAP Faculty of the Year award.
Dr. Walker has maintained independent research funding since 2004 and teaches Physiology to Nursing students using a deep learning methodology that prioritizes conceptual comprehension over rote memorization, significantly enhancing critical thinking skills and knowledge retention among students.
