Julia Jorati is a Professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She received her MA from the University of Göttingen (2008) and PhD from Yale University (2013), followed by six years at The Ohio State University before joining UMass in 2019. Currently on sabbatical, her research focuses on the History of Early Modern Philosophy and Philosophical Debates about Slavery and Race from the 16th–18th centuries.
Her recent work includes two books on Slavery and Race (Oxford University Press, 2024) and articles exploring Leibniz's Metaphysics, Philosophy of Mind, and Free Will. She co-directs the Question Everything summer philosophy program for high school students. Her publications span topics like Monadic Teleology, Divine Causation, and Moral Necessity in early modern thought.
Key themes in her research intersect with Historical Justice, Colonial Thought, and Embodied Cognition in non-causal frameworks. She is editing additional volumes on Early Modern slavery under contract with Oxford University Press.
