Julia I. Burton is an Associate Professor in Silviculture at the College of Forest Resources and Environmental Science (CFRES), Michigan Technological University. Her research integrates silviculture, functional ecology, and forest dynamics to advance sustainable forest management, biodiversity conservation, and climate change adaptation in managed ecosystems.
Education:
- PhD in Forest Science, University of Wisconsin-Madison, 2011
- MS in Forest Biology, Ecology, Conservation & Management, University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, 2004
- BS in Forest Ecosystem Management and Restoration, University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, 2002
Her research focuses on silviculture, forest dynamics, functional ecology, disturbance ecology, and climate change mitigation. She investigates how forest management practices influence tree regeneration, understory composition, and ecosystem resilience. Her work emphasizes experimental approaches in northern hardwood and montane forest systems, examining the interplay between silvicultural treatments, biodiversity, and abiotic drivers.
Her recent publications (2019–2023) demonstrate a strong focus on forest responses to disturbances—both natural (e.g., spruce beetle outbreaks, tip-up mounds) and anthropogenic (e.g., silvicultural harvesting). Themes include tree regeneration dynamics, functional trait variation, carbon management trade-offs, and the impacts of herbivory and microsite creation on community structure. These studies span disciplines in forest ecology, plant physiology, and global change biology.
Scientific Awards:
- Featured in issue highlights, American Journal of Botany (2020), for paper: 'Trait integration and functional differentiation among co-existing plant species'
Dr. Burton actively mentors graduate students, as evidenced by her co-authorship with asterisk-marked students on recent publications. She teaches core courses such as Practice of Silviculture (FW 3010), Ecological Silviculture (FW 5510), and Forest Vegetation Dynamics (FW 5130). She leads the Silviculture & Forest Dynamics Lab, which conducts field-based experimental research on forest management and ecological responses. Her work contributes to science-based silvicultural practices that balance ecological integrity with resource management objectives.
