Julia Hölzl

Julia Hölzl is a Research Fellow at The European Graduate School since 2014, specializing in continental philosophy with a focus on finitude, transience, and 20th-century thinkers like Blanchot and Heidegger. She has held Visiting Professor roles at Ramkhamhaeng University (Bangkok, 2009) and Visiting Lecturer at Central European University's Gender Studies Department. Her primary affiliation is with the European Graduate School, where she advises doctoral students and engages in theoretical writing.

Education: She earned a Magistra der Philosophie from the University of Vienna (2004) in Political Science, History, and Sociology, followed by a Master of Arts in Peace, Development, Security, and Conflict Transformation from the University of Innsbruck (2006). Her PhD (2009) from The European Graduate School, supervised by Wolfgang Schirmacher and Jean-Luc Nancy, explored transience via onto-phainomenology. A second dissertation (2015) at Aberdeen University's Centre for Modern Thought addressed finitude through Heidegger and Blanchot.

Research interests center on continental thought's limits, language articulation of endings, and intersections between art and politics. Recent work critiques Blanchot's 'neutre,' examines art-politics relations, and deconstructs finitude's ontology. Since 2016, she leads postdoctoral research in the PEEK/FWF project 'Six Formats' at Vienna's Academy of Fine Arts, focusing on art theory and cultural studies.

Publications include ad finitum (2015), [ Given, If, Then] (2014), and articles on transience, neutrality, and cultural memory. Her upcoming On Endings co-explores Blanchotian writing. No awards are listed, but her work spans academic editing, NGO activity, and teaching in Austria, Germany, Hungary, Thailand, and the UK.
